Many outdoor products have a durable water repellent (DWR) applied to their exterior to render them effective. Unfortunately, they tend to be infused with a class of chemicals categorized as perfluorocarbons, or PFCs, that detrimentally spread through the environment.
PFCs are released into the air and water throughout the manufacturing process, as well as day-to-day use. Although these compounds help resist water and protect your outfit from becoming dirty or riddled with stains, they also take a very long time to break down. PFC traces have been found everywhere from rivers to glaciers to soil.
