Crew Socks Are the Everyday Go-To
When it comes to sock height, our poll showed a strong preference for taller socks. Out of all responses, 62 percent of people said they wear crew socks most often. That’s more than triple the number who reach for ankle socks (20 percent), and it leaves over-the-calf (12 percent) and no-show socks (5 percent) in the back of the drawer.
Crew socks offer the best of both worlds. They’re tall enough to provide comfort and protection under boots and trail shoes, while still breathable and stylish enough to wear with sneakers, slip-ons, or sandals. In another poll, we asked our community which sock styling they’re most likely to try this season. The winner was overwhelming: 67% of people are pairing crew socks with sneakers.

That said, there’s still growing interest in more minimalist styles. The return of ankle socks popular among runners and tonal color schemes shows that quiet design has its place, especially in everyday wear or sport-forward looks. Visible layering, while a smaller segment, points to a continued interest in texture, silhouette, and seasonal transitions.

In our final poll, we asked: What’s your ultimate sock style move? Out of 126 responses, the results were clear:
• Mountain print: 47%
• Retro stripe: 29%
• Bold color block: 15%
• Tie-dye or space-dye: 10%
Nearly half of respondents gravitated toward mountain-inspired designs, confirming that outdoor heritage and nature-based patterns are resonant. These designs bring trail energy into everyday wear and reflect Smartwool’s roots in the mountains of Colorado.
Retro stripes continue to hold appeal, especially as part of sport-lifestyle styling. They deliver a sense of nostalgia while pairing easily with everything from joggers to denim.
