At Smartwool, we’ve always believed that socks are more than just something you put on before your shoes. They’re one of the most versatile tools in your wardrobe. They protect, support, express, and adapt to every kind of movement and mood.
We surveyed members of our brand community, including sock buyers and enthusiasts to understand what people are actually reaching for, how they wear their socks, and which types of socks they’re excited about for 2026. The results show that people are thinking about how their socks feel, perform, and show a little personality as they choose options.
Crew Socks Are the Everyday Go-To
When it comes to sock height, our poll showed a strong preference for taller socks. Out of all responses, 62 percent of people said they wear crew socks most often. That’s more than triple the number who reach for ankle socks (20 percent), and it leaves over-the-calf (12 percent) and no-show socks (5 percent) in the back of the drawer.
Crew socks offer the best of both worlds. They’re tall enough to provide comfort and protection under boots and trail shoes, while still breathable and stylish enough to wear with sneakers, slip-ons, or sandals. They add a layer of structure to any look and offer a canvas for artistic designs, stripes, or color accents.
At Smartwool, our crew socks are built with natural performance in mind. We use Merino wool to regulate temperature and reduce odor, while offering all-day softness and structure that stays in place without slipping or bunching.
Socks Are Part of the Outfit for Most People
Socks are more than a basic essential. When we asked our community, 86 percent said socks play a role in their outfit decisions. Only 14 percent said they were purely functional.
Here’s how the numbers break down:
• 25% said socks are fully styled and part of the outfit
• 36% said they match the vibe, even if they aren’t the focus
• 24% prioritize comfort first, style second
• 14% said socks are strictly functional
This shows a big cultural shift. They can be chosen to coordinate, contrast, or complete a look. Whether people are going for graphic designs or tonal textures, they’re paying attention to the details. And with Smartwool® Socks Merino construction and thoughtful color palettes, it’s easier than ever to build your style from the ground up.
Sock Styles Show Personality in Every Step
We asked our community what their go-to sock style is. The results were almost evenly split between bold expression and cozy comfort:
• Prints and graphics: 37%
• Cozy: 36%
• Sleek and tonal: 19%
• Sporty throwback: 8%
Together, these preferences point to two clear themes. First, people are embracing socks that show off their personality through graphic patterns, bright colors, and playful details. Second, comfort is still a top priority. Soft fabrics, plush cushioning like slipper socks, and a feeling of warmth matter, especially when the temperature drops.
The rest of the responses reveal a love for both simplicity and nostalgia. Sleek, tonal styles give a clean, elevated look, while retro stripes and sport-inspired designs add a hint of throwback energy to winter layering.
Crew Socks with Sneakers Is the Look of the Year
In another poll, we asked our community which sock styling they’re most likely to try this season. The winner was overwhelming: 67% of people are pairing crew socks with sneakers.
The full breakdown:
• Crew socks + sneakers: 67%
• Socks + sandals: 20%
• Bare ankles: 9%
• Socks + heels: 4%
Visible socks have become part of everyday streetwear and trail wear alike. Whether you’re pairing your socks with technical footwear or casual kicks, the crew-height silhouettes found in hiking socks allow for both performance and personality. With more people looking for intentional layers and functional flair, it makes sense that this combo is leading the way.
The socks-with-sandals movement continues to gain ground, too. Once considered to be a fashion faux pas, it’s now a widely accepted way to balance comfort, breathability, and style. While socks with heels remain a little more niche, they reflect a growing confidence in using socks as a bold statement layer.
Statement Socks Lead the Way in 2026
We asked our community what sock trend they’re most excited about for 2026. Here’s how the voting broke down:
• Statement socks: 47%
• Ankle sock resurgence: 25%
• Monochrome match-up: 17%
• Visible layering: 11%
Statement socks are leading the charge, and it’s no surprise. From eye-catching colors to bold graphics to trail-inspired prints, socks are no longer something to hide. They're now used to show off personal style and complete a look with intention.
That said, there’s still growing interest in more minimalist styles. The return of ankle socks popular among runners and tonal color schemes shows that quiet design has its place, especially in everyday wear or sport-forward looks. Visible layering, while a smaller segment, points to a continued interest in texture, silhouette, and seasonal transitions.
Our Community's Favorite Sock Aesthetic? Mountain Inspired
In our final poll, we asked: What’s your ultimate sock style move? Out of 126 responses, the results were clear:
• Mountain print: 47%
• Retro stripe: 29%
• Bold color block: 15%
• Tie-dye or space-dye: 10%
Nearly half of respondents gravitated toward mountain-inspired designs, confirming that outdoor heritage and nature-based patterns are resonant. These designs bring trail energy into everyday wear and reflect Smartwool’s roots in the mountains of Colorado.
Retro stripes continue to hold appeal, especially as part of sport-lifestyle styling. They deliver a sense of nostalgia while pairing easily with everything from joggers to denim. Color blocking offers a strong, clean aesthetic, and the tie-dye and space-dye results show that texture and variation still have a loyal following.
