How Often Do People Wash Their Merino Wool?

Merino’s odor resistance is doing its job. The majority of Smartwool™ fans get at least 2 wears, often more, before washing, especially on lighter-use days like travel, lounging, or low-sweat activities. On trail days or runs? Into the hamper they go.

  • 53.1% of respondents told us they wash their Merino socks every 2–3 wears. 34.4% wash after every wear.
  • A small group waits until socks start to smell (6.2%) or washes once a week or less (3.1%).
  • Only 3.1% said they don’t really keep track.

On desk days or travel days, Merino’s odor resistance buys another wear, sometimes two, without sacrificing fresh-feel. As one fan told us, “Since I wear multiple times between washes, I hang base layers overnight to air freshen.” Another added simply: “I Don’t wash too often and always hang to dry.”

How does this stack up to common sock wearers? In a survey conducted by Rush Ordered Tees it found that 75% of Gen X, 69% of Boomers, and 63% of Millennials said they wash socks after every wear. The average Smartwool™ sock wearer tilts a bit more toward re-wearing, which is reasonable when Merino stays fresher on low-sweat days.

How often is Merino Wool Clothing Washed?

Merino’s magic isn’t limited to socks. Base layers, underwear, and tops offer the same odor-fighting, thermoregulating performance. Here’s how Smartwool™ wearers approach laundry for those:

  • 41% wash after 2–3 wears
  • 31% after every wear
  • The rest stretch to weekly, as needed, or don’t keep track

The closer to skin and the sweatier the activity, the more often people wash. But for everyday wear or chilly, dry hikes? One wear doesn’t always mean laundry day. As one Smartwool™ fan told us, “After wearing them I wash them especially when hiking, backpacking etc. I always make sure I get the bacteria, sweat etc. out of my clothes before wearing them. Makes the wool clothing last longer. Smartwool clothing is amazing they wash and dry just like regular clothes!”

Merino Wool Laundry Report Card

Merino wool apparel is made to be easy to care for, but only if you treat it right. At Smartwool™, our care philosophy is simple: Wear often. Wash easily. The key is knowing when to clean, how to clean, and what to avoid.

So, we compared how Smartwool™ fans actually wash their Merino gear against our recommended merino wool care guide.

Let’s see how they scored:

Care Habit

What Smartwool™

Fans Reported

Smartwool™ Care Best Practice

Machine wash cold

88% do this

Wash your Merino wool gear in cold or cool water using a gentle cycle to protect the fibers and extend product life.

Lay flat or hang dry

63% do this

Air drying is the best way to maintain the shape and performance of Merino wool. Lay flat or hang dry whenever possible

Use wool-specific or mild detergent

41% do this

Use a mild, wool-safe detergent and never bleach or fabric softeners, which can break down natural fibers.

Use a laundry bag

22% do this

For extra protection, especially with lightweight or blended pieces, use a mesh laundry bag to reduce abrasion.

Hand wash when needed

6% do this

Hand washing in cool water is recommended for delicate items when stains occur.

Toss Merino in with the rest of the laundry

22% do this

Avoid washing Merino wool with heavy fabrics, rough materials, or high-heat cycles that can cause pilling or shrinkage.

Smartwool™ wearers are doing a solid job with Merino wool care. Cold washes, gentle drying, and an increasing number of people using wool-friendly detergents means gear is lasting longer and performing better. As one fan shared, “I use a detergent specifically designed for performance fabrics. It keeps my sweaters and socks soft and fresh smelling. The colors remain vibrant.”

That is the benefit of choosing detergents made for wool. They are gentler on fibers, preserve color, and help Merino stay soft over time. There is room to improve, but overall laundry day practices look strong.

Wear More. Wash Less. Adventure Longer.

Smartwool™ wearers know that Merino is different. It stays fresh when cotton and synthetics don’t. It washes easily and holds up for years when cared for properly. And the less you wash, the smaller your footprint, consuming less water, less energy, and brining longer life for your favorite gear.

So whether you are hiking, running, skiing, or traveling, trust Merino to handle the miles in between laundry days.
