Socks Made in the USA: Embracing Quality, Sustainability, and Local Craftsmanship

We were born in the Colorado Rockies circa 1994, and our award-winning performance and activity socks continue to be designed, developed, tested and constructed right here in the USA—using the finest Merino wool sourced from ethical and sustainable farmers.

Our American Born, New Zealand Sourced Merino Wool Story

Merino sheep, the starting point of our supply chain, are sheared twice a year for their wool. In 2010, we signed a contract to exclusively source our Merino wool from the New Zealand Merino Wool Company. who founded ZQ the world’s first Merino wool accreditation program. Emphasizing sustainable farming, we source our wool ethically, reflecting our commitment to local communities and animal welfare.

Domestic Economic Impact

Here at Smartwool, we wear our commitment to USA manufacturing like a badge of honor. Keeping our production domestic isn't just a facet of our brand identity! It's a commitment that contributes to the strength of our local economy and job market.

While many socks sold in the U.S. are produced overseas, we're proud to be part of the select group that manufactures right here in the USA. We're proud to play our part in supporting local communities and reinforcing the spirit of American craftsmanship. When you choose Smartwool, you're not just opting for superior comfort and quality, you're also supporting a thriving domestic industry. Together we're forging a future where our adventures and our values stride side by side.

Sustainability and Environmental Impact

As the world grapples with environmental challenges, embracing sustainable fashion choices becomes increasingly crucial. Our Merino wool socks and other products proudly contribute to sustainability efforts in multiple ways.

  1. Merino wool is a natural, biodegradable material. When your socks eventually reach the end of their lifecycle, you can rest assured they won't add to the burden of landfill waste. This aspect of merino wool aligns perfectly with conscious consumerism principles.
  2. Our commitment to sustainable sourcing ensures that our merino wool is ethically produced, prioritizing the well-being of the animals involved. By choosing socks made in the USA, you are indirectly supporting our dedication to ethical and responsible manufacturing practices.

We've also set sail on innovative initiatives, like our 'Second Cut' project through our partnership with Material Return, that have already made a substantial impact. As clothing recycling programs ramp up across the nation and globe, it turns out socks are one of the least likely garments to be recycled. That’s why we created Second Cut.

Material Return is a fantastic employee-owned cooperative, to gather both post-production and post-consumer waste. Together, we're transforming the concept of 'waste' into a new wave of potential.

And we're not stopping there. We've laid out a roadmap that's aiming high: 100% climate-positive wool, 100% regenerative materials, and 100% circular materials by 2030.
